Thanks from the Land Army Girls

m-four’s Events team was recently praised for its professional attitude and efficient service at an event to celebrate and honour surviving Women’s Land Army members. A letter of thanks was received from the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Warren Smith, who commended the team on its contribution and assistance. “The occasion would not have been as successful as it was without your contribution,” Mr Smith commented.

It may have been 63 years since the end of World War II, but we still honour our heroes on 11 November. This year, however, more than 33,000 unsung heroes were also honoured with an award. The surviving members of the Women’s Land Army were presented with a special badge to mark their contribution, and a special Service of Thanksgiving was held at Manchester Town Hall on 7 November.

The Women's Land Army (WLA), known as the Land Girls, was reformed at the outbreak of World War II to work on the land so the male workers could go to war. By 1943 there were some 80,000 young women working in all areas of agriculture. They became a national icon in their green ties, jumpers and brown hats, and worked from dawn to dusk every day, milking cows, digging ditches, sowing seeds and harvesting crops.

Greater Manchester is thought to be home to 598 former members of the Land Army. Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Warren Smith, who hosted the event, said: "These are some of the country's unsung heroes, whose work during the war enabled our country to be fed. It is both an honour and a privilege to share in honouring these women, among whom my own mother was numbered."
